Brazil President signs deals with China

China and Brazil have agreed to expand cooperation in trade and technology. That's the latest message from the summit between Chinese President Hu Jintao and his visiting Brazilian counterpart Dilma Rousseff.

It's Rousseff's first visit to China since she took office in January. She's leading a delegation of business leaders from the country's top companies. Both leaders expressed willingness to enhance cooperation in various fields, and deepen their relations.
Meanwhile, President Hu called for mutual trust to ensure their cooperation can benefit both sides. He also urged stronger ties in technology, and called for exchanges on measures that can improve people's well-being. (Courtesy: CCTV)

Brazil is the largest country in South America. It is the world's fifth largest country, both by geographical area and by population. It is the only Portuguese-speaking country in the Americas and the largestlusophone country in the world.

Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Brazil has a coastline of over 7,491 kilometers (4,655 mi). It is bordered on the north by Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and the French overseas department of French Guiana; on the northwest by Colombia; on the west by Bolivia and Peru; on the southwest by Argentina and Paraguay and on the south by Uruguay. Numerous archipelagosform part of Brazilian territory, such as Fernando de Noronha, Rocas Atoll, Saint Peter and Paul Rocks, and Trindade and Martim Vaz. It has borders with all other South American countries apart from Ecuador and Chile.

Brazil was a colony of Portugal from the landing of Pedro Álvares Cabral in 1500 until 1815, when it was elevated to United Kingdom with Portugal and Algarves. The colonial bond was in fact broken in 1808, when the capital of the Portuguese Kingdom was transferred from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro, after Napoleon invaded Portugal. The independence from Portugal was achieved in 1822. Initially independent as the Empire of Brazil, the country has been a republic since 1889, although the bicameral legislature, now called Congress, dates back to 1824, when the first constitution was ratified. Its current Constitution defines Brazil as a Federal Republic. The Federation is formed by the union of the Federal District, the 26 States, and the 5,564 Municipalities.

Bloomberg Brazil Economic Summit:

Brazil has transformed into a shining light of Latin America as growth has once again surged in 2010. Brazil is a leader in a number of commodities, ranging from coffee and iron ore to soybeans and chickens. Energy investors are particularly interested in Brazil, as corporations like Petrobras announce new deep-water oil and gas discoveries. Food processing is one of the country’s strongest industries, giving the country a huge leg up on other emerging markets, including India and China. Now, a new administration takes office in 2011, facing challenges including limiting crime, increasing domestic security, preparing for the 2016 Olympics and controlling interest rates. The Bloomberg Brazil Economic Summit will cover the hottest real estate, energy, financial, technology and commodity-based private companies while exploring the potential pitfalls of the public sector as Brazil moves into its new phase as global economic powerhouse.
